Weeks, not eighteen months: how AI changed the economics of enterprise software
What once took a team of 20 to 50 engineers and a year and a half can now be delivered by a small expert team working with AI agents. Here is what that changes for buyers.

For most of the history of enterprise software, the cost of a serious system was set by headcount. Twenty to fifty engineers, twelve to eighteen months, a budget that only governments and large corporates could justify. Everyone else made do with spreadsheets and patience.
That arithmetic has changed. A skilled architect working with AI agents can now specify, generate, test, and integrate production-grade systems at a pace that would have been a fantasy three years ago. We build this way every day. It is not a demo.
What AI actually speeds up
It is worth being precise, because the hype obscures the real gains. AI does not remove the need to understand the business. It removes the cost of the parts of engineering that were always mechanical:
- Scaffolding, boilerplate, and integration code that used to consume the first months of any project.
- Test coverage, which teams under deadline pressure always cut first and regret later.
- Documentation that is written alongside the code rather than reconstructed afterwards.
- Migration of legacy data and logic, where reading and translating old systems was slow, expensive work.
What it does not change
Somebody still has to know what the system should do, which stakeholder will block it, and which regulation applies. Security review still has to be done by people who know what they are looking for. Judgement has not been automated. That is why our engagements are led by senior architects, not by prompts.
What it means if you are buying
Three things. First, a pilot is now cheap enough to run before committing to a platform, so you should insist on one. Second, fixed-price, fixed-scope work is realistic again, because the risk of a build overrunning has dropped. Third, the quality bar should go up, not down: if delivery is faster, there is no excuse for skipping tests, documentation, or security.
The firms that master AI-driven delivery now will set the standard before the market catches up.
